The 2024 CVA Study Tour is well underway, and what an incredible journey it has been so far! This unique opportunity has brought together 21 participants representing 15 Christian campsites across Australia, all united by a shared desire to grow, connect, and strengthen one another in ministry.
At its heart, this tour isn’t just about visiting beautiful sites—it’s about building relationships, sharing knowledge, and discovering how collaboration can sustain and inspire us in our work for the Kingdom of God. Today, as part of our fourth stop, we arrived at Mount Hermon, nestled in the breathtaking redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. 🌲✨
A Stop Beneath the Redwoods
Mount Hermon is a place of awe and wonder, not just for its beauty but for its legacy in Christian camping. Before arriving, we made a quick stop to marvel at the General Grant Tree in Kings Canyon National Park. This incredible giant sequoia, standing at 267 feet tall and known as the Nation’s Christmas Tree, is a testament to the majesty of God’s creation. 🎄🌟
Our visit to Mount Hermon today felt especially significant, not just for its history, but for the wisdom shared by Bill Fernald, a leader with decades of experience in Christian camping ministry.
The Power of Collaboration: Lessons from the Redwoods
During our time together, Bill shared the inspiring story of the mighty Redwood trees. 🌳 These towering giants are some of the tallest in the world, yet their root systems are surprisingly shallow—reaching only 10 to 13 feet deep. What gives them their strength isn’t the depth of their roots but how they spread outward, intertwining with those of neighbouring trees up to 80 feet away.
This interconnected network provides stability, enabling the trees to withstand fierce storms and thrive for thousands of years. 🌐🌊 For us, this is a powerful metaphor for ministry. Just as the Redwoods find their strength in connection, so do we in the relationships and collaboration that sustain us.
Bill’s story also reflects the very foundation of CVA (Christian Venues Association) and CCI Worldwide. In the 1950s, a group of men in Christian camping faced such overwhelming challenges that some considered leaving ministry altogether. Yet, through mutual sharing of solutions, prayer, and Bible study, they found the strength to continue. Their commitment to standing together laid the foundation for a global network of collaboration and support that continues to flourish today.
Why This Journey Matters
As I reflect on today, I’m reminded of why this trip matters so much, especially this year. For me (Melle), this has been a very hard year. There have been moments when the challenges of ministry felt overwhelming, but this journey has been exactly what I needed.
To travel alongside 21 others who understand the highs and lows of this work has been a reminder that none of us are meant to stand alone. The camaraderie, the shared wisdom, and the encouragement we’ve found in one another have been a true gift.
This study tour isn’t just about visiting breathtaking places like Mount Hermon or marvelling at the General Grant Tree. It’s about standing together in Christ, encouraging one another, and finding renewed strength in our shared mission. Just as the Redwoods thrive through their interconnected roots, so too do we find strength in connection, collaboration, and Christ-centered community. 🌿
Looking Ahead
As we prepare for next week’s CCCA Let It Rain conference, I feel energised and inspired. This trip has already been a testament to the power of collaboration, and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead. Together, with our roots intertwined in Christ, we can withstand the storms, grow stronger, and continue the work God has called us to do. 💪🌏✨
Thank you, Bill, for your wisdom and hospitality today. Standing here at Mount Hermon, where you’ve dedicated decades to ministry, has made this moment all the more meaningful.
